KUALA LUMPUR: Umno secretary-general Tengku Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said he expected the integration of teachers into Umno grassroots to be seamless as historically they were no stranger to the party.
"I can assure (the teachers) that Umno members will definitely welcome them with open arms.
"Teachers, by the nature of their work, have a close relationship with society and before the General Orders curbing their participation, they were very involved in branches, holding the post of secretary."
Federal Territory Umno liaison secretary Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee, however, wanted the government to review the decision to allow teachers to enter politics.
He said it was important to retain the credibility and honour of the teaching profession.
MIC vice-president Datuk S.K. Devamany supported the decision, saying becoming politically active would enhance teachers' abilities as educators.
"Getting involved in politics will allow them to have a better understanding of their community and their students' social backgrounds and needs, which could only help in their teaching," Devamany, a former teacher, said.
The amendment to existing regulations to allow teachers to participate in politics would require those wishing to contest or be appointed to any post in a political party to get prior written consent from the Education Ministry secretary-general.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the entry of teachers into politics would bring changes for the better to the party. "Teachers are respectable in society. Their voices are accepted by the people.
"They are also skilful in organisation and have wide networking.
"Whether they decide to contribute by contesting for posts at the grassroots level or by just giving ideas, they will definitely liven up the party."

The Topeka franchise of Comfort Keepers moved last week into expanded quarters at 2016 S.W. 37th.
Comfort Keepers provides in-home care to seniors and others who need help with the activities of daily living. The company's stated goal is to maintain the highest possible level of independent living in a person's home for as long as possible.
When Sarah and Randy Cox opened the business in 2002, they were the office staff and employed 10 caregivers.

PRIZED possessions owned by a callous crook have been sold by police on eBay.
A Rolex watch and a diamond pendant were put on the auction site in a bid to claw back thousands of pounds of cash Melanie Middleton stole from her employer.
The married mum pilfered more than pounds 200,000 from George Neale's building firm, which she joined at the age of 15 as an admin worker and where she was treated like a daughter.
Middleton, 47, was jailed for 15 months and ordered to pay pounds 35,239 or face more time behind bars after she was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of theft and false accounting.
She had used the money to bankroll a love of the high life including paying for a toyboy on the side, fancy cars and gambling.
But now her web of deceit has come back to haunt her as officers auctioning off her cherished jewellery to get the best value for her illicit haul.
It is believed to be the first time Northumbria Police have used the website to compensate a criminal's victim.
The Rolex watch, which started with a bid of pounds 1,200 was bought for pounds 2,155 while the pendant sold for pounds 920.
Paul Gullon, a financial investigator, said: "We're very pleased with the resulting funds raised via Leicestershire constabulary's asset realisation unit.
"The funds raised will be passed to Mr Neal as further compensation as soon as possible."
Over 20 years Middleton became a valued employee and friend to her boss and his family, who even paid for her honeymoon.
But the former accounts manager, of Thornton Close, Pelton, Chester-le-Street, admitted conning 75-year-old Mr Neale out of pounds 205,000 between January 2000 and December 2006. Heartless Middleton was ordered to sell the items after it was determined she had gained more than pounds 230,000 through her criminal lifestyle.
A judge decided she had around pounds 31,000 worth of criminal assets which could be sold and used to compensate her exemployer, a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court last month heard.
In confiscation cases, financial investigators calculate how much a convicted criminal has "earned" through crime.
They can then be ordered to pay back assets they have in their possession to meet the order. If they don't, they can have their prison sentence extended.
When she was imprisoned in 2008, police were only able to recover pounds 24,746 from Middleton, who claimed some of the stolen cash was spent on a relationship with a younger man.
After the order was made, Northumbria Police financial investigators received intelligence that the woman held more assets, and it was discovered she had a ladies' Rolex watch and a diamond pendant.
Buyers had three days to try and bid for the two items.
